My name’s Dylan (he/him), and I’m playing around with this whole personal blog thing, mainly to give me a place to jot down my thoughts. I hate the idea of personal branding, and I’ll try to keep a healthy variety of posts here.

Three rules I live by
- Produce more than you consume.
- Leave everything better than you found it (including people).
- Don’t be a jerk.
What I do
Software Development
I’ve been writing software for the better part of a decade, and it’s taught me more about how people work than how computers work. I think that the debate around the “right” way to develop software is a little misguided because we’re viewing the problem incorrectly. Software itself should not be seen as an industry, but rather as a tool that adapts to other areas of expertise. I believe that as software becomes a more mainstream skill, each industry will develop their own standards and expectations for software. It will all be tailored to the problem you’re trying to solve.
Gardening
Gardening has been a consistent theme in my life since I was a child. While I’ve only recently had the space to experiment and practice these skills, I believe they’re crucially important to cultivate. My primary goal is that of utilitarianism: growing that which will benefit myself and those around me. There’s so much we still don’t know about soil and the organisms within it, and I think that focusing on understanding these relationships is the key to restoring soil health and growing sustainably.
Movement
Despite my (mostly sedentary) career in software, nothing fuels my soul more than moving. Whether running, skiing, canoeing, or making it up as I go, I’ll take almost any excuse to get out my front door and explore more of what’s around me. I’m particularly drawn to tough physical feats that require a lot of mental endurance to complete them.
